Debate

Did you realize that the candidates didn't choose the questions? They were required to answer the questions the moderator (who is not a Republican) put to them. It had nothing to do with what issues the candidates or the Republican Party felt were important.

dmarco comments

you gave a pretty good comment on your theme of voter pickins and as voters we do have tendency to pick the wrong candidates to run our country and we cry like babies for four or more years. Yes we all of the voting age should look hard at all the candidates and choose with extreme caution because our likelihood depends on one persons ideas and opinions and decisions. Being President is a hard job because no matter what you cannot please all the people or half the people any of the time.

Disagree with thesushi - Space Exploration

I must applaud Ms. Lograsso for her insight. I agree! In light of the nation's record deficit spending, it does seem frivolous to me to incur an expense for technology development that's best left to the private sector. To set the record straight,[thesushi], Microsoft, Apple & Intel became public companies in 1986, 1984 & 1986, respectively. This is 15 to 17 years after the lunar landing. There are numerous other ways to invest in our future technology. How much money would we be spending on going to Mars? Should that money be spent to find cures for cancer, diabetes, etc., as well as, alternative energy sources. The list can go on and on. These are the type of tough decisions that should be part of our national debate.

Space Exploration

Ms. Lograsso,

It's one thing to tuck your head in the hole that you've dug, but it's another to simply dismiss (as Rep. Tancredo did) the ability of technology to improve the economics of a nation. Without the space program, the technological advancement of our nation would not have birthed Intel, Microsoft, or Apple. IBM would not have created the revolution that the entire world embraced.

For the percentage of expenditure for an event that the entire American population stopped what they were doing to watch in 1969, I have to say, let's do it again. Forward-looking, and fiscally responsible. MSU journalism students are impressive. Cheers, Mako out.

Agree with Mama D - Thank You

Thank You for your comments Mama D! I agree! I also completely disagree with eseales comments. These students are very well informed! And, eseales, most scientists do agree that global warming is a very unfortunate reality and we must take action to save the planet. Also, Michigan is not the only state with a record number of foreclosures. [Florida, Calif., Nevada, etc. ] And, even if an individual doesn't agree with war, we all appreciate our wonderful soldiers. Also, eseales, with all due respect, this is a blog. It's not a thesis or essay or term paper. It's not a newspaper column, it's a blog being written during a debate. These students are very well spoken and should be commended for getting involved in the dialogue and political process on issues important to their future. The comments written by eseales are not constructive or objective and express a very biased point of view.

Ahhh..journalism

I must disagree with your comments that these students are completely insulated from facts and reality. Second, our national economy is roaring? Thats why our dollar is soaring downward? It has been thirty years since the canadian dollar was valued more. Our gas prices have doubled since 2000. It was $1.47 in 2000. Our independent truckers are feeling the pinch in a big way. Success in Iraq and Afghanistan? Yes, success for the Taliban that is regaining control in Afghanistan along with another bumper crop of Opium because our president had his eyes on a bigger prize. Remember Osama?, the guy that attacked us? Quote from our president.."I..I just dont think much about him". Nice, but he is protecting us, right? With our mercenarey army that makes double what our guys make. I can't even continue to address your nonsense. Like you stated to these students, learn the facts about an issue...you will have to watch more than just fox news to accomplish this.

Commendation to all the MSU Students

I appreciate the honesty, open-mindedness and integrity of all the MSU Students. It's wonderful to see well-informed young people who not only care about, but who also have the courage to speak out about important issues. You should all be very proud of yourselves! Congratulations and Best Wishes to You All!

eseales comments

I happen to agree with eseales. I went to a school for journalism in Oklahoma that deducted 50 points for a typographical error and 100 points for a factual error. I know some things make it through the cracks, but responsibility is important in the media to say the right thing, and make sure it's proper and right.

I like what I'm hearing from MSU, regardless!

Ronald Reagan

I notice that there have been several references to acting the way Ronald Reagan did, especially in reference to the economy. However, they are speaking to people who were toddlers during Reagan's presidency. I'm not sure that was the best strategy.

illegal immigration

It seems like this is going to be the hot topic for the debate, but it seems like the cadnidates are more interested in discussing whether or not the others associate with immigrants and George Bush than their plans for legislation.

Ahhh...journalism

I'm not sure if I should be shocked, saddened or simply satisfied by the fact that I knew when I ventured into this discussion of MSU journalism students on the upcoming GOP debate, I would discover a group of young people completely insulated from facts and reality. From their complete lack of logic and their ultra-chic compassion for terrorists to their refusal to use punctuation, this generation of objective, serious journalists is sure to make Dan Rather and the rest of the media gods proud! If I had a dollar for every time I read "I'm not as informed as I should be" in these blogs, I'd have enough to pay the tax I'm guessing Jennifer Granholm is charging me for commenting on this story. Here are facts: 1) Our national economy is roaring. A real journalist is capable of looking beyond his/her state borders to the state of the nation - and the state of the nation is fantastic. Millions of jobs created, historically-low unemployment and six-plus years of growth equal one heck of a strong economy. Sorry Michigan, but you're the ones who keep electing democrats. 2) The success we've had in Iraq and Afghanistan is historic. Iraq is becoming a beacon of freedom in the Middle East. Be proud of your soldiers and the amazing success they've achieved. 3) This one goes out to the kid who wants a president who "won't turn his back on the Great Lakes." Hellooooo... ever hear of a little thing called the Constitution? Believe it or not, it actually separated the states from the federal government. You should concentrate on electing a governor who won't turn her back on the Great Lakes first. 4) Global warming isn't caused by man. This will shock you, but I learned that the sun actually has more to do with our climate than carbon dioxide. I know - it's crazy! Journalists of tomorrow - buck the trend and learn the facts about an issue. If you're passionate about something, consider the idea of taking time to actually learn about it. You're all demonstrating your bias against the GOP from the start, which doesn't say much for your objectivity. But, hey, you're journalists, right? To be fair - I only made it through 15 blogs before I couldn't take it anymore.

Waterboarding

Dmarco,

Is it really the issue of waterboarding, or is it more about the fact that citizens have no clue what is going on with their own government? Waterboarding is used as a training tool for certain (note certain) volunteers in the military, not all of them. In fact, to assert that all US Soldiers somehow go through waterboarding training or are submitted to that is wrong.

Maybe you can make that argument to Hell Week participants. Enjoy the debate, and welcome to the cold world of politics, where capital letters usually indicate a poor position. Cheers, Mako out.

Dmarco's opening comments

Dmarco,

First off, we do NOT torture people. Waterboarding is used as a training method on our own troops.

In Guantanamo, we have mistreated NO ONE. You are being lied to.

We do not and HAVE NEVER treated our prisoners in the manner that our soldiers have been treated by the terrorists.

You REALLY need to inform yourself of the truth and quit listening to those who desire to harm our country.

Threading in forums

We are working on adding threading to the forums. Clicking on the headline of a post will now get you related posts in a few different ways.

- If the post was sent to us in response to an article, clicking on that post's headline will retrieve all comments on that article, and clicking on the "See related article" link will send you to the article itself.

- If the comment was submitted in response to a cybersurvey, clicking on the headline will take you to the cybersurvey and its related comments.

- If you click on the headline of a forum post that was simply posted in the forum, you will get all posts with that same headline.

If you want to add a comment to a thread in the forum, use the same headline as the post to which you want to respond.

If you find a problem, please tell us, and thanks in advance for your patience as we work to improve the forums for you.
