Will everyone quit piling on Freman Hendrix for not being more vocal with regard to the situation of the former mayor. He worked for a non-profit entity, Eastern Michigan University and serves the American Red Cross. When working for non-profits you cannot mix your job with politics; which is exactly the reason why he is on leave from EMU as he pursue his quest to become the next mayor of Detroit. Additionally, how many of the other candidates expressed outrage at what the former mayor did? And to take it a step further, how many private citizens expressed outrage. There were more non-residents that were critical of the situation than there were residents. Sadly, there is a poll that exists that shows the former mayor as still having some juice in that city. So what exactly does that say about the citizens and the elecorate there considering all that he has done to embarrass the city?
As someone that personally knows what Mr. Hendrix has done to improve EMU's image in Lansing and DC, I would have no problem supporting him based on any educational initiative. Quit with the excuses! If Hood is your guy, that's fine and dandy, but do not try to villify another candidate at the expense of trying to justify your support for someone else. Trust me, Hood will not win so you might as well get behind someone else. And by the way, it was 2005 when Freman Hendrix previously ran for mayor and lost to your ex-mayor.
Best of luck to you in your run for city council, but my money is on Karinda Washington, John Bennett, David Cross, Gary Brown, Kwame Kenyatta, Brenda Jones and any other fresh face that will bring some fresh ideas to a stale legislative body. I am hoping that Roy McCallister also throws his hat into the ring again.
People Are Stupid
This goes to show just how truly pathetic people are. With so many other worthy causes to give to, people are submitting funds to someone to help them get out of a predicament that they most likely allowed themselves to get into. Hell, we all got problems, so maybe if I change my name to someone famous and go on the radio and make mention of my plight, all would be well.
This is just as bad as the foolish people that voted in a poll that they would most likely want Sarah Palin to be their next door neighbor. This is the same woman that before August of this year not many people knew existed. There is nothing about that woman that appeals to me to even want her as a classmate, nonetheless a neighbor.
Mayoral Candidates
League of Women Voters,
I have signed your petition. Question: Did know that in Detroit's history we used to have over ten districts and 20 City Council persons at one time?
The point is I support your efforts and those who want term limits and historically we have had districts before and have information on my website that shows that representation by district is more efficient.
BTW, I have well over 1,000 signatures for my candidacy but I would like your support and the support of every organization, block club, non-profit, for profit, person or group that wants to see better ideas, more industry and continued innovation on the Detroit City Council.

Darren,
I would much rather hear what the Honorable John Conyers has to say about federal dollars being miappropriated at the Detroit Public School District under Coleman and Calloway-to the tune of about 40 million in 'ghost' accounts.
I am not anti-John Conyers, but I am not about to be a sycophant that will allow a man with power whom I admire historically to be derelict in his duties!
I wrote a paper about John Conyers and Charles Cole Diggs, Jr and presented it at Yale Unviersity back in 2006. As a member of PhiAlphaTheta.org
Still, we need political accountability!
His meeting with these candidates is probably mere window dressing announcing a change in D.C. will mean more federal dollars and that they all should get ready to leverage this amicable relationship Detroit has not experienced in years.
Again, what does Conyers have to say about Detroit not getting that new Federal Isotope Physics Lab that went to Lansing. Detroit has a Carnegie I Research Institution (Wayne State University) ... That would have been a great fit in Tech-Town, our new incubator and technology corridor for entrepreneurship!
Where's the leadership at ...we have to stop sending names to Washington and start sending people with; purpose, design, and energy, and creativity. If a person had these qualities but has lost their zeal-then we should send new leadership-as in Mary Waters, but Detroiters need to start thinking out of the box. .. It seems we live out this quote by Aesop: "We hang the petty thieves and appoint the great ones to public office."

Darren,
I think Hood's idea for re-directing and steering monies from feder Block Grants that were all be absent during the Republican years in D.C., can now count on some of that money coming back to Detroit. Its ugly when you have to play politics with the economy!
A reason why I support Hood as a Candidate for Detroit City Council is for this singular reason. Hendrix, though I voted for him in 2004 against the ousted Mayor I do not think he offers a solid plan for the School and the school system aside from proptery taxes are the two biggest pitfalls to attracting residents to stay in Detroit.
I met a seargent from Wayne State University's police force and he probably makes 50-70K and he says he won't live in the city with these two issues unaddressed. Hood addressed the issues.
Hendrix gives us a lot of warbling and to quote Marcia Davenport on www.m-w.com this quote is nothing but "a tangled maze of evasive verbiage as a typical [Mayoral] platform."
I fault Hendrix for staying quiet and not exerting any leadership while the crisis with the ousted Mayor was going on. He may have a job with Eastern Michigan as a Goverment Liaison-but he's still a private citizen of this city interested in being its Chief Executive Officer.
Hood's idea of steering Block Grant dollars is in keeping with Supplemental Educational Services--such as tutoring and other educational 'supplements' that can keep a child busy with intellectual vigor.

I have written nearly 500 responses to edidtorials and blogs in the Detroit News about public questions affecting our city. Where are the hundreds who think they want to be a Detroit City Council person. Why not mix it up with the Nolan Finleys and Daniel Howes and Darren Nichols'

Darren,
To be honest Holt may have be the first Mayoral candidate to discuss getting an Olympics here, but I am the first candidate for office in the city of Detroit for 2009 to discuss it publicly via my website. I had envisioned placing a new NBA Franchise in the motorcity-that actually plays in Detroit! I opined that Dave Bing or Chris Weber or Isaiah Thomas would make excellent candidates to lead that effort. All Detroit would have to do is pony-up the land say 30 acres or so-no cash at all, and no tax abatement.
My idea was to name the team the Detroit Engines! To play in a new stadium to built on the south end of Belle Isle with Windsor as its backdrop---stocked with yacht slips for those who wanted to boat to a game...sweet huh?...the complex would be called the North American International Complex.
This new NBA arena could also double as Convention Space for the Auto Show (I would have voted against the Cobo Expansion because I believe L. Brooks Patterson grand stands too much) as well as give Detroit an added facility for an Olympics bid to go along with our other stadiums and sports arenas.
With the addition of the Book Cadilac and the Fort Shelby among other hotels Detroit is quietly positioning itself for another bid...and to be candid Darren I was first to draw attention to the so called "model city" under Cavanaugh--though I was not the first to offer up some video---kudos to you for that!

conyers invitiation
Is there a difference between what Conyers is doing w/ the mayoral candidates in Detroit & what Glaboeyvich has done in Chicago? Why is Conyers involved in discussions w/ SOME of the candidates? There should be a public forum for that purpose not some private conversation that has strings attached. Detroit needs no more "stuff" happening!
Mayoral Candidates
Mildred Gaddis, like everyone else, has her favorite mayoral candidate. She, however, has the microphone at her disposal, thus her ability to sway more voters.
Voters should be very careful who they listen to and what that person is saying. And they should never, never let someone else make up their mind for them, which is what she's trying to do.
Basic
This is just an out the way somehow great idea. The city is trying to get out of a hole, schools closing, people are losing jobs, and we got homeless wondering the streets. Here's the idea. We got a number of empty schools in the city (Mackenzie, Redford, Murry Wright) just to name a few, empty buildings that stand (building near Murry Wright off Grand River)Why dont city leaders and the school board get together and think about turning those buildings into shelters. It would bring jobs into the city, get rid of some of these empty buildings (before another burns) get the homeless off the streets and maybe just maybe turn the city around. The next mayor should really consider doing this if he really cares about the city. I love this city and dont plan on moving anywhere no matter how bad it gets. I'm just tired of being part of a punching bag. We have a great city, but nobody to really turn it around. They cant say it cant be done. Over the past year or so we've remodled and reopened 2 hotels (Book Cadillac, Fort Shelby) that stood empty and abandoned for years and take a look at them now, they went from ugly ducklings to swans. We could use this
(Stanley) Christmas
Mr. Christmas' platform is to build amusement parks on the riverfront. Too late, sir. We already have the GM headquarters AND Detroit City Hall there to amuse us!
JoAnn Watson to DC
What are you thinking?
Great. Just what we need. Another lightweight advocating for us. Isn't this the racist that said "Nobody wants a white woman in Lansing to decide the fate of a black man in Detroit"? I read the other day that Cockerel went as well. Wonderful, another Mayor with a perjury charge! Detroit (and by extension) all MI looks like a joke!
Where is Granholm? Isn't she an "economic advisor" to our new president? The mayor of Pontiac (who noone outside SE Michigan knows) was on CNN the other day taking calls (he actually did a pretty good job... when he stuck to the economy...lost some credibility when shilling for some of the labor excesses of the past). Where the heck was Jennifer? Where the hell is Barak? I voted for him to represent the middle class. He and his minions are silent? Time to vote for another change!
Mayoral Candidates
Mildred Gaddis is a staunch supporter of Freeman Hendricks. Pay attention to the questions asked of him versus the other candidates.
