Great Web site for low-cal grocery tips

I'm slightly addicted to www.hungry-girl.com. The site, by Lisa Lillien, offers product reviews and tips on tons of healthy grocery items, plus solutions for "fixing" unhealthy recipes (even cocktails) and more. Her book, "Hungry Girl: Recipes and Survival Strategies for Guilt-Free Eating in the Real World," is $10.77 at Amazon.com.

Fashion industry greets Michelle Obama; Vogue features Cindy McCain

Everybody knows about Michelle Obama's Wednesday morning appearance on "The View." But you may not know the night before her big TV hosting gig, dozens of fashion designers and stars greeted her at a private fund-raiser in Chelsea.

According to Women's Wear Daily,Vogue's Anna Wintour and celebrity stylist Andre Leon Talley hosted the reception. Afterwards, attendees had a private dinner at Calvin Klein's home.

Zac Posen showed up wearing an Obama T-shirt proclaiming, "YES WE CAN" under a tuxedo jacket. Peter Som, Behnaz Sarafpour, Catherine Malandrino, Erin Fetherston, Cynthia Rowley, Yigal Azrouel, Nicole Miller, Iman and Tory Burch were just some of the fashion bigs who paid $1,000 to $2,300 to be there.

Som and others complimented Obama's sense of style and grace. For the night, she wore an all-black ensemble by Isabel Toledo. And for her "View" appearance, she chose a black and white dress from White House Black Market (a store owned by Chico's), adorned with a floral pin.

Meanwhile, Cindy McCain is profiled in the June Vogue, professing her love of German luxury label Escada, but saying she'll likely switch her loyalties to American designer Carolina Herrera if she becomes first lady. For the story, McCain was photographed in a Michael Kors sweater paired with Lucky jeans, and in a white Ralph Lauren trench coat.

Great deals on cool office supplies

Okay, it's a bit geeky to get excited about office supplies. But with gas soaring above $4 a gallon, I'm excited about any shopping find under $10 -- especially if it's both fun and functional. That's what had me doing a double take at Staples.

Right now, Staples stores feature a "Mix it Up" display, where paper clips, binder clips and pushpins in fun designs spill like penny candies from big bins. You can fill a small or large plastic container with any assortment of the pins and clips for either $5.99 or $9.99.

I spent more than 10 minutes carefully stuffing pink binder clips, silver pushpins and colorful star-shaped paper clips into the $5.99 container. It's amazing how many will fit if you're patient.

While you're there, check out the new assortment of green office supplies. Office Max offers an even bigger array of recycled products right now, including Zebra retractable pens (2 for $2.99) made from recycled car headlights, CDs, cell phones and plastic bags. And, you can buy eco-friendly mailing packets made from newspaper to recycled binders at reasonable prices.

Sale on summer sun-protection cosmetics

You may not be familiar with her cosmetics line, but you've probably heard of her book: "Don't Go the Cosmetics Counter Without Me." Author Paula Begoun has spent years critiquing and studying ingredients in cosmetics. She's not a chemist or a scientist, but she is a good consumer advocate who has taken cosmetics companies to task for using harsh or unnecessary ingredients.

A huge proponent of high-quality sunscreen, Begoun has put her own sun protection products on sale through June 30. At PaulasChoice.com, you can save 15 percent on all her SPF products and get a free sample kit of 15 trial sizes.

Included in the sale are her Ultra-Light Weightless Finish SPF 30 Sunscreen Spray (now $13.56), Extra Care Moisturizing Sunscreen ($11.01) and her Best Face Forward Foundation SPF 15 ($12.71). She also sells smooth lipsticks with sunscreen and other interesting products. Even better, she offers extremely affordable sample sizes of everything she sells, from cleansers to lotions and lipsticks. Stocking up on them will make packing for your summer vacations a breeze.
