It is time for the Mayor to go, I feel his actions undermind the city and Michigan. Sharon McAppeal tries to contact the judge and tells everyone she just had a question? Is she a first year law student? They will stop at nothing to try to keep this man in office so they can continue to suck every last dime that Detroit has left. When will the Gov. act?

It was obvious to me that the Tigers front office wanted to downplay the fact that Pudge was traded. They know he is a fan favorite.
The Tigers website message board is filled with comments of unhappy fans.
They should have traded him for a bag of balls and box of bats (as far as I am concerned).. Kyle Farnsworth?
I'm just happy Pudge had already signed my Verlander no-hitter score card for me. I expect he will receive a large ovation on Labor Day when he returns.

What a stupid thing to do, man-handle a cop. Kwame, you don't use your head for anything but a hat holder. How did any Detroiter consider you brainy enough to run a city? This is why you are in the trouble you are in - reacting without thinking. Thinking might be too much to expect. All you had to do, from the beginning, was do the right thing. Noooo, you had to use the best angle to line you and your friends and relatives' pockets. You had to flaunt the law.
Guess what. You are fighting the law, and you are not winning. Hang it up, because you are done.

You pretty much lost me on this one, Bob.
If you liked the Chevrolet Cavalier and had good luck with yours, that's great. I don't think anyone would equate it with a Camaro or a hot Mustang or anything else with muscle, though, which is what makes a mini-cult of Cavalier tuners so unusual that the Washington Post chose to write about it.
As for Al Jazeera, is Paul Eisenstein of the Car Connection supposed to go work there for insulting the Cavalier, or am I supposed to go for reprinting his quote from the Post's story? I don't think that network does a lot of car reviews, so Paul probably isn't a good candidate for an opening there.
I'm also a bit confused about how not adoring the Cavalier equates to loving foreign cars. If you'll scroll down a bit, you'll find posts in which I praised the Saturn Aura and the new Malibu, both of which would be on my short list if I were buying a new car. On the other hand -- speaking as someone who drives a turbocharged PT Cruiser convertible -- not much in the Chrysler and Dodge lineup revs my engine these days.
I hope I'm not expected to blindly adore everything with an American nameplate. If I am, is there a statute of limitations on how far back I have to go? I don't have any immediate plans to make fun of the Chevy Vega, but you never know when the urge might hit.

I owned 4 of them new starting in 1984, ran all of them way over 100k miles with no major repairs, ever.
I just "retired" one my daughter was driving with over 280,000 miles, guess what I replaced it with?
It's about time the news media start looking at it's anti-american bias for what it is, and for the readers to stop putting up with it.

Neal Rubin's Misinformations
Yes, this organization should be investigated. Mr. Sheffield mentions below that the non-profit educates the community. He doesn't also mention that his non-profit also holds contracts with the city in which he receives other profits besides the $100,000 per year from the city. His high school receives funds from DPS and I'm not sure how many other of these types of businesses he has opened running under his non-profit DABO.
I also have a question of DABO financially supporting Kilpatrick's defense? Isn't this considered lobbying? Isn't it illegal for a non-profit to lobby?
One question that I have is that is there really a need for his non-profit anymore? I do not condone racism; I do support equal opportunity and strong, peaceful communities. I may seem to have an idealistic mindset but shouldn't we be working to achieve a peaceful multi-cultural environment within our communities rather than segregating people into "black" or "white" organizations? My prayers are for peace and understanding for all and I believe that is what Martin Luther King prayed for.

To Horace Sheffield:
You, sir, are the one throwing mud and slime around. You accuse Neal Rubin of being in league with a lynch mob, simply because he pointed out that you, through whatever group you want to claim, receive money from the city. That acceptance of money raises a question of objectivity when you defend your criminal Mayor. Yes, Mr. Rubin questioned your group's effectiveness and suggested you might be personally profiting from your acceptance of city money. He didn't, however, suggest you were part of a bloodthirsty mob. But you suggested that of him. You automatically reached for that Race Card once again. How convenient for you, to be able to claim that every person who finds fault with you MUST be a racist. The racist, sir, is in your mirror.
We aren't an 'extension' of you
I remember debating over one word in the sentence that moved you to write an entire page: Whether to leave the last segment "and by extension the public for whom the media report," or to make it "to whom the media report."
In this context, I opted for "for," because typically, most people don't get to put questions to Antonin Scalia or Kwame Kilpatrick or Jim Leyland. That's what we get paid to do, on behalf of our customers. Speaking of which ... Thanks for the click.
Neal Rubin's Misinformation
In writing by Neal Rubin entitled. "Any volunteers to help count Sheffield's non-profits?" Mr. Rubin engaged in the type of scandalous subterfuge that has been common with people of a "free press" who disagree with someone differing position.
Let clear a few things up. One, Rev. Sheffield has not received one dime from the City of Detroit to do anything. The Detroit Association of Black Organizations (dabo), an organization my founder founded, has been awarded grants from the City of Detroit NOF fund. These grants, which my father first applied for, are not given out by the Mayor but are applied for and then go through a public process, involving the City Council, which results in numerous organizations being awarded these grants annually. To state that "the City of Detroit pays the Rev. Horace Sheffield III about $ 100,000 per year to teach people to create non-profits" is blatant mistruth and a deliberate lie. In fact, none of the $100,000 awarded to DABO for this program is paid to me at all. Furthermore, there are numerous people who have received help starting and bolstering their non-profits through this program. Other organizations like the UAW have provided assistance, instruction, and collaborated with this program in the past and some still do. I invite you, Mr. Rubin, to come out and sit in on one of the classes before you taint its reputation while trying to throw mud on my face.
Finally, we have provided this training to over 10,000 people over the last 20 years and if you do not see "flourishing non-profits on every other block in Detroit" is because that not the kind of story you are looking to publicize. You would rather pander to those who always see the worst in what we do in Detroit.
And by the way I work for a living. I have master's degree, I am educated, I come from family that is use to working for a living - so I don't have time to "graze happily at the city budget buffet." And unlike like you, judging from the smut you've tried to smear, it seems as if you spend your time somewhere that taints your outlook, and causes you to attack and belittle others who don't share your point of view. What is that Rubinism 101?
This is why people in Detroit form the opinions they do about people like you. Besides not being true, there is no objectivity in what you wrote. And it - at least to me - candidly bespeaks the same bigotry that was manifested by the racist mob who broke down the door at Dr. Ossian Sweet's home, demonstrated by the existence of restrictive real estate covenants that precluded my grandfather from purchasing a home from a white in a white neighborhood in Detroit, and is evidence by your callous maligning of my character.
So I volunteer to count the non-profits, and will volunteer your name, number, and email address to the hundreds of people who are now taking classes at - oh maybe I should not say it - the Detroit Association of BLACK Organizations.
I look forward to speaking with you to set the record straight.
We aren't an 'extension' of you
I take exception with your claim that the news media is an extension of the public for whom they write. It's not.
We applaud our elected representatives when they appear. The news media does not.
We have respect for their privacy, family, and personal habits. The news media does not.
We ask questions that might be discussed over the kitchen table. The news media does not. They all think they have a better way to run the government (local, state, federal, whatever)
When we tell each other stories we keep it in perpective and don't sensationalize it. The news media does not.
When we tell stories to each other we don't dwell on murders, rapes, and shootings. The news media does.
When we talk about our elected officials we don't take a heavy cynical view. The news media does.
When Watergate happened, we all learned not to trust our government. But that day has passed. Today, I can honestly say I trust my government leaders more than I trust the newspapers and news shows. You are just too depressing and sensationalized. Nothing 'reported' can be believed anymore.
I learned to doubt the news when I was in college. I attended a party with probably 1,000 peaceful party goers. It was an annual end of classes event. There was one incident of a couch being set on fire and thrown into the street. It involved maybe 50 people. Yet the news story sounded like the college students had run wild and were destroying the town. I couldn't believe how far off that story was from the truth. I learned then and there to suspect everything the news said. Nothing in the media has ever given me reason to have second thoughts about that either.
I notice that no news people call each other yellow journalists anymore. Is is a case of the pot calling the kettle black?
(I don't live in the Detroit area anymore, but was so incensed at this 'media is an extension of the people' thought that I joined this website just to refute it.)
Neil Rubin and Justice Scalia
Say whatever you want about Justice Scalia. He stilll rates 1000% in my book, based on his judicial decisions. He, fortunately, is one of only four justices with the right (pardon the pun) slant on things. We definitely don't need any more Ginsbergs or Souters making laws from the bench.
