Detroit 'rednecks'?
Evidently Don Cherry doesn't keep up with the news. There hasn't been a 'redneck' living in Detroit since 1972 when Coleman Young became Mayor.
message to John Niyo
Hi John,
I'm not writing to comment on the Tigers.
You may be familiar with the article on Don Wildman and his workout partners in May's Esquire Magazine. I passed it on to a friend, who in turn sent your 7/25/07 article on Chris Chelios Workout Regimen to me. Can you assist in my getting an E-mail address or phone # for Don? I am a weekend warrior from nearby Moorpark (CA) who would like to join Don on one his workouts and see how long I last...
Thank you,
Jay Dersahagian - age 53
dead kittykats
i didn't think i would be saying this until late june/early july, but the 'motown kitties are dead'. they choked a lot earlier than i expected.they will be known as the biggest bust in major league baseball history. as soon as i saw on espn they were picked to win it all,i buried my head in my hands and said 'goodbye to this baseball season.'they will never come back from this deficit because they don't have enough 'guts' to make it back.look at last year (well, let's not).once again we have a team that lends credo to the nickname of detroit...the motor,i mean 'choke city...'
Too important to let it slip by...
I¬タルm writing this because after several weeks it appears that the NFL isn¬タルt willing to police the actions of their league. This upsets me because I have an 8 year old son who plays football, baseball and a daughter who plays soccer. I continue to teach each of them about fairness, doing your absolute best at all times, and discuss what it feels like to win by doing your best. My son has asked me about the Patriots, cheating, and ¬タᆭ ¬タワDad, why do the let them get away that¬タン? To date, I haven¬タルt been able to provide him with an adequate answer or at least one that I am ready to provide to him. The NFL TALKS about competition in a very prideful manner, claims ownership of the world¬タルs greatest sports game and yes, even talks about fairness. Attached is a copy a portion of Vince Lombardi¬タルs most famous speech. What do you think he would have had to say about the New England Patriots and their cheating ways? It is afterall, ¬タワhis¬タン trophy they hand out to the SuperBowl winner each year. I¬タルm certain that other teams have cheated too. But, it would seem to me that all who receive ¬タワThe Vince Lombardi Trophy¬タン must exemplify Coach Lombardi¬タルs philosophy, work ethic and passion. It seems clear that the Patriots are missing the point of the Coach¬タルs spirit. What¬タルs a solution? I have an idea¬タᆭ If the Patriots cheating (and any other team) goes without a much more severe penalty than the NFL seems to be willing to hand out there will be no reason for them and other teams to do the same or more. That being the case maybe the NFL should remove the extremely honorable name of Coach Vince Lombardi from the trophy that they hand out every year. Let¬タルs make it the ¬タᆭ say¬タᆭ the Michael Vick trophy or a trophy with a lesser name. But, certainly not ¬タワThe Vince Lombardi Trophy¬タン. It appears to me that the NFL could take a lesson from the NCAA here. How about a 1 ¬タモ 5 year exclusion (depending on the severity of the infraction) from Post-Season play? I believe that would get the attention of any franchise. What do you think?? This issue isn¬タルt just about the Patriots, or the NFL. They don¬タルt know it but they¬タルre defining our children¬タルs values and sense of fair play and circumventing our teachings. Please don¬タルt just let this issue die or just fade away. It¬タルs far important to our young sportsmen and women for us to let them down. What it Takes to be Number One - by Vince Lombardi It is a reality of life that men are competitive and the most competitive games draw the most competitive men. That's why they are there - to compete. To know the rules and objectives when they get in the game. The object is to win fairly, squarely, "by the rules - but to win. And in truth. I've never known a man worth his salt who in the long run, deep down in his heart, didn't appreciate the grind, the discipline. There is something in good men that really yearns for discipline and the harsh reality of head to head combat. I don't say these things because I believe in the "brute" nature of man or that men must be brutalized to be combative. I believe in God, and I believe in human decency. But I firmly believe that any man's finest hour - his greatest fulfillment to all he holds dear - is that moment when he has to work his heart out in a good cause and he's exhausted on the field of battle - victorious. -Vince Lombardi
The Detroit Sports National Agenda
This is a subject I'm sure I'm not the only one who has ponderd. I would like to see someone comment or write a story on the absence of in-depth reporting on Detroit teams. I moved out to Houston, Tx in January of this year. I knew that I would be subject to a barage of Astro/Texan/Rockets/ you get the idea, stories and reporting. But seeing this also reaffirmed my contention that the Detroit sports scene is all but non-existant throughout the nation. Aside from the Red Wings, the Pistons have been a viable NBA franchise since the 80's. However, watching a game on TNT or ESPN/ABC is comparitive to viewing a practice squad against the starting 5 in that the comments and views are so heavily slanted towards whom ever our opponent is that night. Same with a Fox or ESPN broadcasted Tigers game. I could of swore I heard discontent in the voice of John Miller and who ever his color commentator was during last years epic run. (Joe Buck was the only anchor who had a slight resonance of excitement in his voice during the "in the air to left field, the Tigers march to the World Series" play call. I mean, that wasn't even on ESPN's plays of the year!!!) Is it just me or is there an agenda against Detroit, blue collar sports?
NFL Draft
Lions Please trade down with TB,AZ,or Atl and take Patrick Willis. Has anyone heard of a team wanting to trade up for Gaines Adams? I wonder why. Another Kalimba? If you can't trade down take Calvin Johnson. A Cornerback to consider in the 3rd or 4th round is Josh Wilson. RickyFWT
Midnight for Cinderella
Mr. Foster: I was alerted to this article by Mr. Brian Arnold himself. I am impressed at the emotion and dedication that he exhibits for his "players", however, his emotion, dedication and responsibility to his own biological children leaves much to be desired. Society places so much emphasis and worth on sports and sports figures without caring about the real character of these people. While Brian Arnold pours out his heart, time and soul into basketball, he neglects the financial care and responsibility, time and dedication to his own daughters. He hasn't seen either of them in nearly 7 years and has made no effort to do so. You, see, basketball is much more important. Brian Arnold almost missed the much valued playoffs because he was in the Wayne County jail charged with felony child support delinquency in the amount of $83,000. He and his great attorney came up with the idea to present a motion to get him released in time for the playoffs. Because the playoffs are, again, very important. The motion stated that the plaintiff, myself, had agreed to withdraw claim to any and all child support owed and enter into a private agreement to resolve the issue. Well, I am here to tell you that is a motion based on fiction and outright deceit. So there, your hero is actually no hero at all. He is just one of the many deadbeat, no good biological fathers running around Detroit. You're a reporter, check it out. The Wayne County Friend of the Court case numbers are: 1998-863511 and 1996-666309. Check the jail records for February 22 and they will verify, that yes indeed, he was there. Let's see where your sense of importance lies. Let's see if you write and print this story with the vigor that the sports story was written and printed..... Here is your article: http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2007703210411

james
goodbye james,i won't miss ya,you were never very good against the run,but you did play hard the years your contract was due,the thing that scares me about martz is he thinks its the skill players who win games, when vermeil was the coach the rams had a great offensive line, hence the sucess of their offense when u got here you said the lions o-line was pretty good (i'm not sure what you were drinking or smoking that day but you are sadly mistaken)!!I used to peddle the free press so i am an ex employee, thanks for letting me post the truth about the lions.!!!
Jeter
I would give the edge to Jeter, but he lost my respect when he fell for Mariah Carey. I voted for Rory, too. What a crock.
