Rocco was bad
He was bad, wasn't he? I think Dancing with the Stars is great, but why-oh-why wasn't Rocco voted off last night???
New comedies stunningly bad
"Do Not Disturb" was awful. One long sex joke that made Benny Hill seem groundbreaking.
But I was able to last the whole half-hour with that one. I can't say the same for "Worst Week", which I tuned out on at the first commercial break.
Will this be the year all the new comedies are cancelled by Halloween?
Ed
I loved "Ed," it was must-see TV for me every week. I'm happy to see the cast still hangs out together.
"Interestingly enough, John O'Groats seems like a eatery straight out of Stuckeyville." You're onto something, Mekeisha! The bar in Stuckeyville the gang hung out at was called "The Smiling Goat."
Mad Men/Emmy awards
I agree with the blog about the Emmy awards, especially about Mad Men.
The show should clean up; especially Hamm, one of the best actors I've seen in a long time. He's like Bond: men want to be him and women want to be with him.
But, like Daniel Craig, this guy brings the acting chops to the scene at hand.
I like Hamm's acting when his character Don Draper goes all wobbly, hugging his son, yelling at his wife, remembering his past life, telling a mistress he's leaving.
And. Is it just me, or is this the most original show in a long time?
Since the Sopranos, I mean.
Thankfully, it's not another of the so-called procedural law/cop shows.
By the way, whoever is the set director, fashion director should win, too.
The show nails dead-on the feel for the period in its look and dialogue.
The little details with the kitschy stuff on the walls, the smoking, the cocktails. Whew.
And it offers a so subtle bigger picture angle: the women characters show how the feminist movement was about to make a bigger impact.
Fall TV Lineup
I read your lineup for fall Mekeshia but I was wondering is Reaper gonna return or is it gonna debut in January or is it permanently cancel? I want to know. Reaper was such a good show.
Vampires and Perks
Oh Mekeisha, I am so jealous of all the goodies you get in covering the world of TV. I know they send you cool stuff and it keeps getting better and better! But you are an excellent writer and you deserve the extras.
I am looking forward to that Vampire show on HBO that you previewed. It sounds like a winner from the same guy that did "Six Feet Under"
Also, the boys are back in town! Entourage returns.
Thanks, man! And thanks for pointing out Colin Hanks on "Mad Men." Nice work. I knew he looked familiar.
Stand up to Cancer
I enjoyed Stand Up to Cancer last night, it had great stars, entertainers, ect... and they had both presidential candidates talk about their plans for fighting cancer, Barack Obama got the cheers and the audience was rather quiet when John McCain spoke guess the audience didn't like his plan on the fight for cancer. I was disappointed that the show only lasted an hour. Like the Jerry Lewis telethon for Muscular Dysthropy and the United Negro College fund which unually last all night and day. Hope they make the Stand Up to Cancer event a yearly fundraiser, I gave ten dollars.
Late Night Reruns
What was up with Letterman and Kimmel not doing live shows during the Olympics?
Were they afraid no one would watch because of the Olympics? Or is it their normal summer break??! Fegeurson was live, suprisingly.
Now I am so excited to see Conan and Leno back on! :)
Mad Men Don Draper
Hi Mekeisha, I just about went hoarse screaming at Don Draper the other night. "Hey you dummy, you are married to January Jones, a leggy, sexy bombshell and you cheat with one floozy after another!"
I don't think Don knew that Peggy had a baby but it was hard to be certain. I liked it when Colin Hanks as the priest gave Peggy the Easter egg and said it was for her little one. She was very surprised.
I love this show as well!
WTVS left Detroit
WTVS may have kept the name "Detroit Public Television," but the reality is they abandoned Detroit for Wixom. That's where there new studios and offices are. WTVS had a unique opportunity to demonstrate leadership by investing in the City. (Boston's WGBH has recently done just that.) However, WTVS chose to contribute to sprawl by building 30 miles out of town. No, I will not contribute to Wixom Public Television.
WDIV Changes
I am begging WDIV to not let Ama Daetz or Rhonda Walker get away. Ama is the cutest girl at channel 4 and Rhonda is the sexiest. The best part is that both of these women are so professional and excellent at their craft.
You know how God usually takes celebrities in three's? Well this time He decided to take three African Americans, Bernie Mac, Issac Hayes and the third, Morgan Freeman said "sorry God, I'm not ready for Heaven yet!".
Bernie Mac
Thank you for your piece on Bernie Mac. You were able to convey the significance of Bernie's television character as a multi-faceted human being who happened to be Black...and proud of it. Yes, he was funny on his show, but he was also a good husband, a good father, a good friend, and a good family member. Bernie Mac promoted getting an education, having a solid work ethic, and having good character, particularly to young people. He was a cool, stylish brother who was highly respected by other Black men. Bernie Mac probably did more to encourage Black parents and all parents to exercise control in the raising and nurturing of their children than any other figure in the public eye. I was surprised to learn that Fox didn't like the Wanda character, played wonderfully by Kellita Smith, but I should have known. White television and movie executives have always seemed to prefer black women that ridicule and eviscerate their black men. Bernie and Wanda clearly were partners who shared love and romance. My wife and I are still shocked over the loss of the inimitable Bernie Mac. Your piece made us both feel better. Thank you.
Wilson and Kilpatrick drama
That is some good stuff you written Mekeisha, about the Kwame Kilpatrick and Steve Wilson drama, kinda reminded me of former Mayor Coleman Young and Bill Bonds bouts. Keep it up.
Sorry to hear about the death of comedian and member of the King of comedy Bernie Mac. Never watched his tv show, but I have seen alot of his movies like Ocean's trilogy, Bad Santa, Transformers and the Original King of Comedy. Bernie Mac died at such a young age much like Meet the Press Tim Russert who also died at a young age.
the wire
and the consistent blindness of the Emmy people is clearly in play in regard to 5 years of snubs towards the best series on television. I suppose this is at least "consistent" on the decision to ignore the Wire. What it shows me is "they" (the Emmy nomination cabal) just don't get it.
and they fail Omar's most famous line.... "a man's got to have a code".
cause de got none....
Leno and Kimmel
I enjoyed your blog! But I disagree. Kimmel is much more funnier and "edgeier" since Sarah and him broke up!
I was reading in last weeks Entertainment Weekly (and I was somewhat suprised) that Leno has beaten Letterman in the ratings for the past straight 13 months.
Leno has almost one million more viewers!! And that Fegeruson is coming up fast on beating Conan in the ratings.
It would be a shame if Kimmel moved to 12:35am if Leno went to ABC ... cause according to E.W. Kimmel is finally gaining steam!
But time will tell ...
