New Lawton Ridge Winery steeped in Michigan wine history

The tasting counter at the new Lawton Ridge Winery in Kalamazoo is made from the staves of St. Julian's last cypress tank, which dates back to the 1930s.

Urban wineries are sprouting up across Michigan -- including many that are finding a niche with fruit wines, wines made from kits and wines made from grapes purchased from around the state or California. This vineyard on Dr. Frank's property was quarantined for two years, enclosed by a locked fence and located 400 yards away from the nearest grapevines. It was accessible only to plant scientists and state and federal inspectors for a rare two-year experiment.

A secluded, acre-and-a-half block of vines in a hayfield at Dr. Konstantin Frank's Vinifera Wine Cellars in New York may hold the key to even better Riesling wines and to vineyards that are free of disease in colder states like Michigan. - 10/30/2008

ROYAL OAK -- The nuns and priest of the former St. Michael Elementary School in Southfield would be proud. Four guys who sat at the school's aged wooden desks in the 1970s not only stayed friends, they run Cloverleaf Fine Wine & Spirits in Royal Oak. Among offerings is Black Friar beer at $4.78 a bottle. - 09/30/2008
