This week's recommended Michigan wine
2007 Fenn Valley Vineyards Vidal Blanc Ice Wine Lake Michigan Shore (Michigan) , $35
Vidal, because of its fruit and acidity, is the king of Ice Wine. If you've never tried it before, here's one that's halfway affordable at $35 for a small bottle. You will probably never before have experienced anything this sweet or intense. On the nose, it's pineapple and peaches and apricots soaked in honey. On the palate, you experience a creamy, thick texture typical of Ice Wine -- so named because the grapes are picked at very cold temperatures and are shriveled and frozen. They are usually picked in the wee hours of the morning, in the dark, when it's freezing-cold. You could hope for a tad more acidity and balance with this one, but it's got all the earmarks of an impressive Vidal Blanc Ice Wine. Serve it cold, in small wine glasses, doled out in small servings, to cap off dessert.
